1. Smoked meat sandwiches (Schwartz's)
Smoke meat sandwich has been popular in Montreal since the 19th century, and has taken such strong root in the city that many Montrealers, and even many non-Montrealers, identify it as emblematic of the city's cuisine.
2. Poutine (La Banquise)
Poutine is a dish consisting of French fries topped with fresh cheese curds, covered with brown gravy and sometimes additional ingredients (my personal favorite is Bacon). The dish originated in rural Quebec in the late 1950s.
3. Montreal Bagel (St.Viateur Bagel)
According to native Montrealers, their bagels are the best in the world! In contrast to the New York style bagel, it is smaller. sweeter and denser, and is always baked in a wood-fired oven.
